Beppe Marotta slammed referee Maurizio Mariani for paving the way for Napoli’s contentious 3-1 win at the Maradona Stadium.

Indeed, the 43-year-old referee handed the Partenopei a phantom penalty, shifting the balance in Napoli’s favor.

Furious with the outcome, Marotta publicly criticized the experienced Serie A referee.

In response to Marotta’s post-match talk, Antonio Conte insisted he would never ask a club director to speak on his behalf.

Furthermore, he claimed that he has always defended himself and handled matters personally.

However, La Stampa pointed out that Conte’s claims appear to contradict past incidents, highlighting inconsistencies in his statements.

For example, Conte was moaning at Inter during his tenure at Juventus, with Marotta stepping in to support him.

Needless to say, Marotta was Juventus’ sporting director at the time.

Meanwhile, Conte lamented that he constantly had to face the media himself after Inter’s clash against Borussia Dortmund.
