Napoli will continue to work on the operation to sign Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez in the next few days, according to journalist Gianluca Di Marzio.
The Reds acquired Nunez from Benfica in 2022. Liverpool were getting one of the best young strikers in Europe, who had excelled in Spain and Portugal.
Former manager Jurgen Klopp described him as an incredibly important player even when he is not scoring, but that did not mask Nunez’s deficiencies.
Nunez scored just five Premier League goals for Liverpool this term. The club is reportedly open to offers for the 25-year-old, and Napoli have stepped up.
The Serie A champions are preparing to lose Victor Osimhen this summer and have their sights set on Nunez as a potential replacement.
Despite his shortcomings, Liverpool want to recoup a healthy sum of their investment in signing Nunez.
The former Penarol star has also been linked with Atletico Madrid and Saudi Pro League clubs, but nothing has materialised.
Liverpool have spent big money to secure Bayer Leverkusen duo Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong as they bid to defend their Premier League crown.
A deal to sign Milos Kerkez from Bournemouth is in the pipeline.
The engine room is also crying out for a natural holding midfielder to allow Ryan Gravenberch to move further forward into his more natural position.
If Nunez leaves, the Reds will be back in the market for a striker to replace him.
There were links to Alexander Isak, but Newcastle United will demand an outrageous sum for him.
Hugo Ekitike is another option. The Eintracht Frankfurt forward has a €100 million price tag.
