Netherlands’ Jurrien Timber out of World Cup through injury as Lutsharel Geertruida called up | OneFootball

Netherlands’ Jurrien Timber has withdrawn from their World Cup squad because of injury, with Sunderland’s Lutsharel Geertruida called up in his place.

The federation announced that Timber had not recovered sufficiently to take part in the tournament in a medically responsible way, and that he would leave the pre-camp in New York after the warm-up against Uzbekistan on Monday, 8 June.

Timber, 24, suffered a groin injury on 14 March, missing several months before returning to training in the final week of the season and featuring in the Champions League final on 30 May.

He did not play in the 1-0 friendly defeat to Algeria on 3 June. He has 23 Netherlands caps, the most recent in November 2025.

At club level, the right-back made 44 appearances for Arsenal last season, scoring four and assisting seven as they won the Premier League title and reached the Champions League and League Cup finals. After going off in the first half of a 2-0 win over Everton in March, he played only once more for the remainder of the campaign.

Geertruida, 25, replaces him. Also a right-back, he made 31 appearances for Sunderland last season, helping them qualify for the Europa League in their first campaign back in the English top flight after an eight-year absence. He has 21 caps and featured for more than 20 minutes against Algeria last week.

Timber’s setback might have opened the door for Liverpool right-back Jeremie Frimpong, who has 15 caps, but he has again been overlooked.
