The Netherlands went out to Morocco on penalties in the last 32 at El Gigante de Acero, Mexico. The exit ended Memphis Depay’s tournament and prolonged Corinthians’ World Cup scoring drought.
According to Meu Timao, no player contracted to Corinthians has scored at a World Cup since Carlos Tévez in 2006. His strike came in Argentina’s 6-0 over Serbia on 16 June 2006, a wait that will reach 24 years by 2030.
After that World Cup, Tévez joined West Ham in a deal led by Kia Joorabchian of Media Sports Investment. The company partnered with Corinthians and kept all profit from the transfer, with no payment to the club.
Corinthians had no World Cup representatives in 2010, 2014 and 2022. In 2018, goalkeeper Cássio and right-back Fagner played for Brazil.
Depay was the 26th player linked to the Parque São Jorge club at a World Cup. Recovering from a grade two right anterior thigh tear from March 2026, he played 51 minutes, made one assist and was unused by Ronald Koeman against Morocco.
He came on against Japan after 24 minutes of the second half for Malen with the Netherlands 2-1 up, it finished 2-2. Versus Sweden, he entered with the Netherlands 4-1 ahead and assisted Summerville for 5-1. He also appeared after 32 minutes of the second half in a 3-1 win over Tunisia, without direct goal involvement.
The early knockout earned Corinthians $20,000, about R$ 103 thousand, taking their FIFA total to $80,000, roughly R$ 415 thousand. The club are also due an amount for the Netherlands’ preparation period, as Depay joined the camp on 30 May, which could add $75,000, around R$ 389 thousand.
Depay is set to rejoin Corinthians for the inter-season programme after a holiday, the length still to be set by the board. The squad resumed training last Thursday. The 32-year-old will then decide whether to accept a renewal offer, with his deal running to 31 July.
