Manuel Neuer said in an Instagram post that he has no regrets about reversing his international retirement to play for Germany at the 2026 World Cup, despite elimination on penalties to Paraguay in the round of 32.
After careful consideration, the Bayern Munich goalkeeper returned for one final tournament at the age of 40.
Representing Germany remained an honour for him. The team fell well short of expectations and should have progressed further, making the ending painful.
His return was a deliberate choice driven by pride in the shirt and, with four World Cups behind him, a wish to support younger players on and off the pitch and to help German football.
The ending was bitter, with disappointment beyond words, yet there was deep gratitude and thanks for the backing he has received over the years and during the tournament.
Neuer has now brought his Germany career to a close, finishing with 128 senior caps.
