Manuel Neuer will continue to miss FC Bayern. Ahead of the home game against Eintracht Frankfurt, Vincent Kompany has now spoken plainly – and once again backed Jonas Urbig
FC Bayern will still have to make do without their captain. At the press conference ahead of the Bundesliga match against Eintracht Frankfurt, Vincent Kompany made it clear: „Manuel Neuer is not yet back out on the pitch. He won’t be there for Frankfurt, but Jonas Urbig is fit.“
The coach thus confirmed that the 39-year-old will have to continue his absence after tearing a fibre in his left calf. According to Sky, Neuer will miss at least three weeks and will therefore also miss the top match at Borussia Dortmund on 28 February. For the record champions, this is a serious loss in the title race
Jonas Urbig is once again in charge – and Kompany is sending a clear signal to his young keeper: „We have to send out the message that we trust him 100 per cent. Jonas Urbig has shown what he can do. But he was also in goal last year in the Champions League round of 16 in Leverkusen, even though he hadn’t made many appearances before that. We already had confidence back then and showed it right from the start. That’s important with young players, and we also showed it with Lennart Karl.“
Urbig had already put in a confident performance in Bremen following Neuer’s substitution, and the coach remains calm now – regardless of the pressure on the team
Kompany also emphasised that the focus is exclusively on Frankfurt: „I’m only focused on this Frankfurt game. First of all, it’s very important that we win against Frankfurt. There is no hierarchy of games at the moment. They are equally important to me.“
The Bayern coach also did not want to let the discussion about players with yellow cards such as Joshua Kimmich, Jonathan Tah and Leon Goretzka boil over. „I know the situation with the yellow cards. But whether it’s a yellow card, an injury or whatever: you can’t plan everything. The yellow cards are not a big issue for me. We have to be clever, but we can’t be too clever either.“

Meanwhile, preparation for the Frankfurt game was not ideal. Heavy snowfall in Munich forced Bayern to interrupt training on Thursday. „But then we did some runs,“ explained Kompany
One thing is clear: FC Bayern will go into the coming weeks without Neuer – the trust lies fully in Jonas Urbig.
