New La Liga regulations give Barcelona a chance to renew veteran forward | OneFootball

There has been much speculation surrounding the future of Robert Lewandowski, who is in the final year of his contract at Barcelona.

Although the forward is performing way above expectations for a 37-year-old, Barcelona are mindful of his age and performance levels compared to last season.

The fact that Lewandowski ranks among the highest-paid players in the squad is also weighing on the Catalans.

Renewing Lewandowski’s contract for another year, therefore, will only put pressure on Barcelona, who are already going through economic difficulties.

A big relief for Barcelona

However, La Liga has introduced new economic control norms that open a clear pathway for Barcelona to extend Lewandowski’s stay, reports Mundo Deportivo.

The key lies in the newly approved Article 103, which allows clubs – even those exceeding their salary limit – to renew one player without standard financial restrictions.

The rule states that a club can renew a player regardless of their age or the club’s excess spending status, provided the player’s salary does not exceed 8% of the Squad Cost Limit.

Lewandowski fits this criterion perfectly. The Polish striker currently earns a base salary of around €20 million gross per season.

With Barcelona’s squad cost limit set at approximately €351 million in September, his wages represent roughly 5.6% of the total cost – well below the 8% threshold required by the new regulation.

This regulatory tweak offers Barcelona a lifeline to secure their top scorer for the 2026-27 campaign.

But whether or not they will opt for this option remains to be seen, as the rule also states that the club would have to return the Fair Play space generated by this operation in the following season.
