New Ligue 3 to start with promotion play-offs and Football Video Support trial | OneFootball

The French Football Federation has unveiled the blueprint for the new professional Ligue 3, which starts on Friday at 20:45, when Le Puy visit Bastia.

The promotion and relegation model has been overhauled. The top two will go up automatically to Ligue 2. Clubs finishing third to sixth will contest play-offs, with the winners then facing the 16th in Ligue 2 over two legs for a place in the higher tier, while the bottom three drop to National 1.

French refereeing will take a major technological step with the experimental launch of Football Video Support, FVS.

Designed to be more flexible and less costly than standard VAR, FVS will allow coaches two challenges per match to request a video review of decisive incidents.

A fourth official will be appointed to every match, underlining the push to professionalise the competition.
