Chris Davies’ position at St. Andrew’s has come under pressure in the last 12 months after guiding the Blues to promotion from League One.

The Midlands outfit earned 111 points on their way back to the Championship, but were unable to sustain another promotion challenge in 2026.

Birmingham are aiming to return to the top flight for the first time since 2011 under their ambitious owners Knighthead Capital.

Davies’ side finished 10th in the table, nine points adrift of Hull City in sixth, who earned promotion through the play-offs.

It could be a busy summer ahead for the club, as they target signings that can close the gap to the top teams for next season.

It has been reported by Sky Sports Germany that Augsburg are keen on a deal for Birmingham forward Marvin Ducksch.

The Bundesliga outfit are keen on bolstering their forward line this summer, and have set their sights on the 32-year-old.

Ducksch signed for the Championship side last year in a deal worth €2 (£1.7) million, but he struggled for consistent game time under Davies.

The German made 33 appearances in the league, starting on 25 occasions, while contributing 10 goals and one assist.

The striker was also handed a 14-month ban from driving earlier this month for causing a collision while being found above the maximum drinking limit, with two women suffering injuries.

And that could now accelerate his exit from St. Andrew’s, with Augsburg eyeing a deal to bring him back to Germany.

It’s understood that Ducksch has a release clause in his contract as a result of Birmingham’s failure to gain promotion.

The German club are targeting a deal worth €1 million (£860,000) just 12 months after his move to England.

Ducksch signed from Werder Bremen, contributing eight goals and eight assists in his final campaign with the Bundesliga side.

It remains to be seen whether the forward will have a future in Davies’ plans, but Birmingham will have little control over his position at the club if his release clause is triggered.

Augsburg earned a ninth place finish in the German top flight, finishing just four points adrift of seventh place Freiburg, who qualified for European football in that position.

Marvin Ducksch departure is the best for Birmingham

The deal to sign Ducksch showed flashes of potential, but it ultimately didn’t quite work out as hoped, and a move away makes the most sense for all parties now.

Being able to recoup some of the fee paid to sign him 12 months ago will be solid, if unspectacular, business for the Championship side.

Birmingham will be looking to bolster their attacking options this summer, you’d imagine, if they want to compete for promotion more properly.

If the club are going to keep Davies in charge, then backing him in the transfer window will be the best path for him to succeed next season, and more investment can be expected in this transfer window.
