Middlesbrough have multiple candidates to replace Rob Edwards as manager
Multiple managers have been linked with taking over the soon-to-be vacant role at Middlesbrough, including Steven Gerrard and Raphael Wicky.
Boro are set to welcome their third boss in five months after parting ways with Michael Carrick at the end of last season, which led to the appointment of Rob Edwards.
Making Edwards manager appeared to be a successful decision made by Steve Gibson, as the 42-year-old guided Boro up into the automatic promotion places, which is where they’ve spent the majority of this season.
However, it now appears almost certain that Edwards is to be announced as the next Wolverhampton Wanderers manager, leaving Middlesbrough without a boss at an important stage in the season.
This decision has been met with fury by fans of the North East outfit, who feel like Edwards hasn’t repaid the loyalty shown to him when he was handed the job. But alas, names have already started being rumoured about who will take over at the Riverside.

Given that Middlesbrough find themselves well within the promotion hunt at the November international break, being appointed as the next Middlesbrough boss will be an extremely attractive proposition for a whole host of managers.
According to journalist Graeme Bailey via X, Boro are already working hard on finding Edwards’ replacement.
Tony Mowbray is mentioned by Bailey, but a double hernia operation reported by Alan Nixon is believed to have ruled him out of the running. Like Southampton, the post also states that Mark Robins is admired by Boro but leaving his post at Stoke City seems unimaginable given their start.
Steven Gerrard, Robbie Keane, Gary O'Neil and Raphael Wicky have been discussed, as per Bailey, which gives Gibson a plethora of options to pick from as he tries to identify the perfect man to continue Middlesbrough’s promotion charge.

The 2025/26 Championship campaign has already thrown up a number of surprises, with the three sides relegated from the Premier League unable to perform at the level shown in previous seasons.
This has provided a rare opportunity for multiple other teams in the division to fight towards the top of the table, with Boro one of those who have grasped that excellently.
Middlesbrough currently find themselves in the midst of a promotion battle, which means that Gibson and Co. must pay extra care when selecting Edwards’ replacement.
One wrong call could derail their season, which is why having the November international break to extensively analyse the situation may end up being crucial for Boro’s success this season.
The likes of Gerrard, Keane, O’Neil and Wicky haven’t managed in the Championship previously, which only amplifies the risk of appointing them.
