A new Newcastle United Sporting Director is set to be announced.
Just a case of when he will be able to start work.
Talksport with an exclusive (see below) on Friday morning, that Ross Wilson has agreed to become the club’s next Newcastle United Sporting Director.
The long-term target now seemingly landed, with United having reportedly had Wilson top of their list after Paul Mitchell departed earlier this year.
This exclusive states that Newcastle United are now in advanced discussions with Nottingham Forest to reach agreement on when exactly Ross Wilson will be able to start work at St James’ Park.
United obviously hoping to avoid any lengthy period of gardening leave before he is able to leave Forest.
‘Newcastle United are close to appointing a new director of football to replace Paul Mitchell.
Ross Wilson has agreed to become Newcastle’s new sporting director, talkSPORT understands.
The Magpies are in advanced talks with Wilson’s current club Nottingham Forest.
Newcastle have been keeping tabs on Wilson since he was in charge of transfers at Rangers.
He will join new CEO David Hopkinson as the Toon finalise their boardroom changes.’
The Mag report – 13 September 2025:
‘The new Newcastle United Sporting Director is set to be announced very shortly, unless his current employer manages to convince him to stay at the last moment.
The Times report that Ross Wilson is United’s choice and they want him in post by October.
Wilson is current Chief Football Officer at Nottingham Forest.
The Times say that Evangelos Marinakis, the Nottingham Forest owner, could potentially still convince Ross Wilson to stay.
Newcastle United did of course have to manage throughout the summer without a Sporting Director or CEO.
Paul Mitchell having resigned as Newcastle United Sporting Director.
Whilst this month we finally saw David Hopkinson become the new United CEO.
The Nottingham Forest owner is, as we all know, very hands on.
Absolutely pathetic when he confronted Nuno on the pitch in May when Forest could only draw 2-2 at home to already relegated Leicester, then predictably sacking him early this season (after picking up four points in three games) despite the brilliant job he has done there. Instantly replacing him with Ange Postecoglou, who finished fourth bottom with Spurs last season.
The better news for Forest fans though, was that Evangelos Marinakis did persuade Morgan Gibbs-White to stay this summer, when it looked like he was (ironically) already on his way to Spurs.
