A late stunner from William Osula condemned Manchester United to their first loss in eight matches under interim manager Michael Carrick, losing 2-1 to 10-man Newcastle at St. James’ Park.

Anthony Gordon’s penalty opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time, five minutes after Jacob Ramsey saw a second yellow card, only for Casemiro to level before the break.

The visitors were largely stagnant on the ball in the second period, and were punished by the ten men as Osula curled in a beauty to haul the Magpies within nine points of European football, as United remain 3rd.

Newcastle started off the brighter team and dominated possession in the opening five minutes of the first half.

The Magpies came close to scoring first after Kieran Trippier hit the crossbar before the ball cleared away.

Manchester United started off slower than their opponents and failed to take the lead after a chance from Mathias Cunha flew well over the crossbar.

Newcastle could have scored two in the opening ten minutes through Harvey Barnes whose shot was blocked by Casemiro.

The hosts had five shots at goal to United’s one in the first twenty minutes with both sides searching for the first goal of the match.

Jacob Ramsey was first in the referee’s book with a yellow card for a silly challenge on Casemiro.

Bryan Mbeuno was also booked as he brought down Trippier, leading to a Newcastle free kick which led to nothing.

Two further yellow cards were given to Luke Shaw and Joelinton late in the first half.

Kobbie Mainoo had a chance to score for the visitors following a cross from Mbeuno but it was punched away by Aaron Ramsdale.

The Red Devils failed to capitilise on chances from Cunha and Mbeuno before the half time whistle.

Ramsey received a second yellow and was sent off after losing his footing and falling over near Lammens.

To end a chaotic first half a penalty was awarded to Newcastle after Bruno Fernandes brought Anthony Gordon, who converted a penalty to but the hosts ahead.

Manchester United equalized following a free kick from Bruno Fernandes into Casemiro who headed it into the back of the net.

Newcastle started off as they did in the first, gaining slightly more possession than Manchester United.

Noussair Mazaroui gives away a free kick in a similar position to where Fernandes had for the United equalizer.

Newcastle went close but went right through the wall and out for a corner kick; Gordon could have grabbed a second from the ball in but went past the right post.

Yoro could have given United the lead through a free header which was denied by Ramsdale.

Manchester United enjoyed more of the possession in the last ten minutes and had four chances at goal to snatch the lead.

Newcastle surprised United and took the lead through William Osuna in added time, which gave Carrick his first loss as United boss.

Manchester United host Aston Villa at Old Trafford on Sunday, which now becomes an important match to win as Villa lost 4-1 to Chelsea.

Both teams will be looking to bounce back from their defeats against Newcastle and Chelsea when they meet in Manchester.

Newcastle face Manchester City in the FA Cup on Saturday at the Etihad Stadium before hosting Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League at St James’ Park on Tuesday.
