We asked Davey Hat-Trick to give us his match ratings and player comments after Newcastle 2 Chelsea 0.
At a goal up and a man up at half-time, I thought this would turn into a romp.
Our first half performance suggested it would be precisely that. We were all over Chelsea, even when they had eleven men.
But – credit where it’s due – our opponents made Newcastle scrap for their win, and were the better side in the second half.
My nerves only abated when Bruno scored our second goal.
Looking back though, we did a good job of frustrating Chelsea and it was good to see a few of them losing their rag. Cole Palmer looked particularly peeved.
We shaded the game overall, even if it was what they call an ugly win. But a win it was and I don’t care how ugly they come at this stage in proceedings.
It has made a huge difference to our chances of Champions League qualification, and should we succeed in that, this will go down as one of the best seasons in Newcastle United’s history.
Not the easiest game to rate the players on. It was tight, low on flair, but high on graft. Everyone put in a shift, even if we didn’t create a great deal. I thought our strength was in defence today.
But this was a precious three points from a pivotal game. VAMOS!!
Nick Pope – 8
Two good saves that I recall, otherwise it was a reasonably comfortable afternoon.
Jacob Murphy – 7
Did well – very well – at wing back, especially in the first half.
I’m not sure why Eddie changed to a back four with Jacob at right back, and – understandably – he looked a bit lost at that point.
Once he went back on the wing, all was well again. Another assist to add to his total.
Fabian Schar – 7
Decent performance.
Despite Chelsea’s good second-half showing, Fab never looked like he wasn’t in control.
Sven Botman – 8
So good to have him back. Looked like he’d never been away.
After 30 minutes, Nicolas Jackson realised he was going to get nothing out of Sven, so decided to chin him. I think he was glad to take the red card and skulk off back to the USA for the summer.
Sven just carried on regardless and I thought we looked shakier when he was subbed off.
Dan Burn – 9
My player of the match.
Got his head to everything, put in a couple of crunching tackles, and went up to join the attack throughout the game. Even got an assist. A colossus.
Tino Livramento – 7
Good, without being outstanding.
Made no errors but didn’t get much change out of the Chelsea defence when he went forward.
He and AG had some good interchanges in the first half.
Bruno Guimaraes – 8
A captain’s performance.
Chelsea are a very good team, especially in midfield, so Bruno needed to be switched on from start to finish. And he was.
Worked tirelessly, used the ball well, and scored a lovely goal to send everyone home happy.
Sandro Tonali – 9
Not far off Player of the Match for me.
Imperious, smooth, assured and skilful.
Superbly timed run onto Murphy’s cross to get the first goal.
Harvey Barnes – 6
Not his best game, but then if you’re going to play him on the right, you’re not going to get the best out of him.
But he never stopped grafting and he played his part.
Alexander Isak – 6
Alex isn’t firing at the moment but what he is doing is occupying defenders for 90 minutes.
Even when he’s not on red-hot form, like today, he’s still the player the opposition fear most.
Anthony Gordon – 7
Did OK. Glad to see him having a go at the Chelsea defence and he was a key figure in Newcastle’s first half dominance.
Ran out of steam in the second period and was rightly subbed off. I’m not sure he’s back to 100% fitness yet.
SUBS
Lewis Miley – 6
Decent showing, although Chelsea were in command when he came on. Held his own.
Emil Krafth – 6
The right man at the right time.
Relieved Murphy of his right back duties and things looked more settled after that.
Callum Wilson – N/A
Not on long enough to judge.
Sean Longstaff – N/A
Not on long enough to judge.
