Newcastle United are showing interest in Leicester City midfielder Bilal El Khannouss (h/t journalist John Percy of the Telegraph).
The Magpies have endured a challenging summer transfer window, missing out on several priority targets to rival clubs.
El Khannouss joined Leicester from Belgian club Genk in a deal worth around £21 million last summer. His performances attracted interest from several clubs.
Crystal Palace and Leeds United have also been linked with him. The midfielder’s release clause is set at around €26m.
Newcastle could consider triggering that clause if negotiations with Leicester prove difficult. This would allow them to bypass drawn-out talks.
El Khannouss registered three goals and six assists across all competitions last season.
He is highly regarded for his intelligence and awareness on the pitch. His ability to control the tempo of play makes him a valuable creative option.
The midfielder is comfortable receiving possession between the lines and excels in tight spaces. His close control allows him to escape pressure and retain the ball.
El Khannouss also possesses an excellent passing range. This enables him to deliver accurate through balls and create opportunities for forwards to exploit defensive gaps.
As a number eight or an advanced playmaker, he contributes both in building attacks and in driving the ball forward with purposeful runs.
His vision and composure under pressure give him the ability to unlock stubborn defences, something Newcastle have lacked at times in recent seasons.
If the Magpies decide to make a formal offer, Leicester may face a battle to keep one of their most valuable assets.
