Newcastle United are back in the hunt for defensive reinforcements, and a proven European star could be on the move. According to the Spanish outlet Fichajes, Kim Min-jae is open to leaving Bayern Munich this summer – and the Magpies are already making moves behind the scenes.

Kim was one of the most sought-after defenders in the world after his sensational campaign with Napoli in 2022/23. He played a crucial role in delivering a historic Serie A title, prompting Bayern to activate his €50 million release clause just a year ago.

But despite making 42 appearances and scoring three goals for the German champions this season, the South Korean star could be set for a new chapter already.

Newcastle transfer news – Newcastle contact Kim Min-jae’s agent

According to the report from Fichajes, both Chelsea and Newcastle United have initiated contact with Kim Min-jae’s representatives to explore a potential summer transfer. The 28-year-old defender is under contract at Bayern Munich until 2028, but he is now considering a move to a new league.

A return to Serie A has not been ruled out, but Kim’s priority is a switch to the Premier League. Newcastle see him as a marquee addition to bolster a backline that has struggled with injuries and depth throughout the season.

With club captain Jamaal Lascelles and first-choice defender Sven Botman both ruled out with long-term knee injuries, Eddie Howe needs experience and physicality at the back. Kim Min-jae offers both in abundance.

Kim Min-jae to Newcastle gaining traction ahead of summer rebuild

Newcastle United are expected to strengthen several areas of their squad in the upcoming window, and centre-back is high on the list. Kim Min-jae to Newcastle could become one of the headline stories of the summer, especially if Bayern are willing to listen to offers.

The 1.90m defender would bring composure, aerial dominance, and elite-level experience from both Serie A and the Bundesliga. He is comfortable playing out from the back and thrives in a high defensive line – perfectly suited to Eddie Howe’s system.

Financially, Newcastle are prepared to back Howe again after a season of setbacks. Kim’s market value remains high, but the Magpies are expected to negotiate if Bayern are open to recouping a fee close to their initial €50 million investment.

Whether it is a loan deal or a permanent transfer, the idea of Kim Min-jae to Newcastle is gathering pace.
