Newcastle United have set their sights on Nicolas Jackson after Bayern Munich confirmed they will not sign the Chelsea loanee on a permanent deal this summer.

Jackson has spent the current season on loan at Bayern from Chelsea, where he has scored 10 goals in 29 appearances.

A clause to make the move permanent for a fee of £56.2m was included in the loan arrangement, though Jackson has not made the appearances required to make that clause mandatory.

Bayern have decided against pursuing the player permanently, despite being satisfied with his displays as back-up to Harry Kane this season.

Talksport are reporting that Newcastle are ready to make a move. A centre-forward is top of the club’s list of priorities for the summer window, with last season’s recruits, Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade, disappointing this season.

Jackson is viewed as a Premier League-ready option to improve the club’s frontline, while the Senegal international is set to leave Chelsea permanently. Aston Villa have also been linked, with Unai Emery having worked with Jackson at Villarreal.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe has suggested it will be a big summer for his squad, following a disappointing Premier League campaign.

“If the team’s not performing then, potentially, there might be bigger changes in the summer than was maybe previously first thought,” he said last week.

“I think you have to react to what you see and that goes on a daily basis, a weekly basis, behind the scenes. It’s about attitude, commitment to the team.”
