Newcastle United forward Yoane Wissa delivered a match-winning performance at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, scoring twice to propel the Democratic Republic of Congo to a historic 3-1 comeback victory over Uzbekistan.

The landmark win secured the Leopards’ first-ever progression to the FIFA World Cup knockout stage, booking a round-of-32 showdown with England.

While Congolese supporters celebrated wildly in Georgia, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe will also be delighted with his striker’s performance.

After an underwhelming debut season at St James’ Park, which saw him net just three times in 28 matches across all competitions, Wissa’s display against Uzbekistan suggests he is gradually returning to his best form.

Stepping up when his nation needed him most, Wissa turned the match on its head after Eldor Shomurodov had given Uzbekistan an early lead.

The 29-year-old forward first showcased his composure under pressure, winning a crucial penalty and confidently converting the 68th-minute equaliser. He then capped off his performance in second-half stoppage time, rifling a powerful shot into the far bottom corner.

Following his strike against Portugal in DR Congo’s World Cup opener, Wissa now has three goals at this year’s global showpiece. He will be aiming to deliver once more against England and give Howe further cause for optimism.

Newcastle are not expected to pursue a new centre-forward this summer, meaning the starting spot is up for grabs for William Osula, Nick Woltemade, and Wissa.

Woltemade is also at the World Cup with Germany but has not featured in any of his country’s three matches so far.
