The Magpies took the lead when Nick Woltemade netted his second goal in three Premier League appearances in the first half.

But former United midfielder Mikel Merino levelled before Gabriel turned the game on its head deep into in stoppage time to send the Gunners back into second place in the table.

Before that, there was penalty controversy at both ends of the pitch, while the sight of England international full-back Livramento being carried from the field will be a big concern for Eddie Howe.

Nick Pope was looking for a fourth clean sheet in five Premier League outings and made a string of fine saves - the first in the second minute, when Declan Rice's free kick was met by the head of Victor Gyökeres but directed straight at Pope.

He then made a great stop to keep out a low strike from Eberechi Eze three minutes later, before gathering at his near post after Bukayo Saka had wriggled through on the right.

Pope looked to have conceded a penalty in the 14th minute, when Victor Gyökeres went down under a challenge from the Magpies goalkeeper and referee Jarred Gillett pointed to the spot. But he was sent to the pitchside monitor and overturned his decision upon seeing that the keeper had played the ball.

In the 25th minute, Leandro Trossard hit the woodwork after Rice played him in before United went straight on the counter-attack and Anthony Gordon cut inside, but his attempt lacked the power to test David Raya.

Pope made another brilliant save just before the half-hour mark as he dived to his right to parry another Eze effort, then three minutes later he was equal to a shot from Saka.

It was, therefore, against the run of play that United took the lead; Gordon's short corner was whipped in by Sandro Tonali and Woltemade got up highest - shrugging off a weak challenge from Gabriel - to power beyond Raya.

At the beginning of the second half, Woltemade hit the Gallowgate End bar - although the flag was up against the big German - then Joelinton flashed across goal in the 57th minute.

After that, the visitors dominated but struggled to create many openings aside from a Jurriën Timber header which was superbly kept out by Pope.

But despite his best efforts, the Newcastle netminder could do nothing to keep out Merino's close-range header in the 85th minute. That came shortly after Livramento was hurt after landing awkwardly while challenging for a header.

Video Assistant Referee Darren England was called into action again as Gabriel blocked substitute Anthony Elanga's shot with his arm in the box, but surprisingly chose not to refer Gillett to the monitor for a second time.

And Gabriel proved to be the matchwinner as he forced home in the sixth of eight added minutes.
