The skipper had scored a vital goal against Nottingham Forest in the Magpies' last home league match, and the Brazilian was on target again in the 90th minute to seal all three points after Sasa Lukic had cancelled out Jacob Murphy's first-half opener.

United hit the woodwork twice in the opening six minutes and had further opportunities after that, but the visitors looked to have done enough to earn a share of the spoils at St. James' Park until Guimarães followed up at the Gallowgate End after substitute William Osula's effort was saved by Bernd Leno.

In the fourth minute, after Anthony Gordon was fouled, Kieran Trippier's deep free kick found its way to Nick Woltemade, whose effort struck a post. Seconds later, Woltemade squirted the ball into the path of Guimarães, but his strike from just outside the box was wide.

Then Trippier found the run of Murphy, but from a tight angle the wideman saw his shot cannon back off the upright.

Fulham threatened in the 12th minute when Raúl Jiménez turned in the box but his effort was deflected just wide.

Newcastle took the lead when Murphy dispossessed Calvin Bassey and carried the ball before drilling home - via the inside of the post - from the edge of the area.

Nick Pope was called into action for the first time as he parried a shot from Sander Berge before the ball broke to Adama Traoré, who could only drag his strike wide.

In the 39th minute, Anthony Gordon sent Murphy through in a similar position to the one he'd already scored from, but on this occasion Leno was able to block.

At the other end, Pope saved from Emil Smith Rowe shortly before half time, but he was beaten in the second half when Jiménez's drive crashed against the bar but Lukic bravely forced home.

Both Lukic and Sven Botman suffered head injuries going for the loose ball - Botman had to be replaced by Fabian Schär after lengthy treatment - and there was a lull for some time after the equaliser.

But Newcastle began to ramp things up when Guimarães headed over from a Gordon cross, then saw a shot whistle just wide.

Substitute Anthony Elanga had an effort blocked then Leno saved from Sandro Tonali, and when Joelinton headed into the side-netting from a Trippier centre, then Tonali was denied again by Leno, a draw looked certain to be the final outcome.

But Osula had other ideas as he danced into the box and let fly, and while Leno parried, Guimarães was fastest to react to win all three points for United.
