Newcastle United almost ruined Arsenal’s move for Hincapie

Arsenal completed a late move for Piero Hincapié in the most recent transfer window, strengthening their defensive options with the addition of the Ecuadorian international. The Gunners have built one of the most reliable back lines in Europe over the past few seasons, yet the club was keen to reinforce further and saw Hincapié as an ideal solution.

The move was prompted by a change within Arsenal’s defensive unit. Jakub Kiwior, who had been a dependable figure at the Emirates, was allowed to join FC Porto. While he primarily served as a backup to Gabriel and William Saliba, his role was important in ensuring the squad maintained depth and resilience. His departure risked leaving a gap, one that the club addressed decisively by bringing in Hincapié, who has the potential to be an upgrade on the Poland international.

Complications Around the Transfer

The deal, however, was not without its complications. According to Mirror Football, Bayer Leverkusen initially hesitated to sanction Hincapié’s sale, as they were eager to secure a replacement before finalising the move. Their preferred target was Sven Botman of Newcastle United, but the Geordies refused to enter into an agreement. That stance created uncertainty around whether Arsenal’s pursuit of Hincapié would ultimately succeed.

Despite Newcastle’s reluctance to part ways with Botman, Leverkusen eventually approved the sale, enabling Arsenal to secure their man. Had the German side stood firm, the transfer might easily have collapsed, leaving Arsenal without the reinforcement they required.

For Arsenal, the successful completion of the deal represents more than simply filling a void. Hincapié arrives with the qualities to compete immediately for a place in the starting line-up and provide greater flexibility in defensive structures.
