Newcastle United have announced that they have a new training base as part of Newcastle University’s Cochrane Park sports facility.
It means the women’s set-up will be closer geographically to the men’s and academy’s current facilities, and will also have access to its own training, medical and player care spaces at Cochrane Park.
“We are really pleased to have secured a new training base at Cochrane Park that gives us the opportunity to create our own elite facilities that we need to continue our progression on and off the pitch,” said Grace Williams, Newcastle United’s director of women’s football, in quotes released to the media.
“This is an exciting step forward for the club and I would like to thank Newcastle University for their support throughout and we are excited to continue working with them.”
Williams was appointed as director of women’s football this summer following two years as head of women’s football at Crystal Palace.
Professor Jane Robinson, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Engagement and Place at Newcastle University, added: “We are delighted to partner with Newcastle United’s Women’s first team, Under-21s and Under-16s. This collaboration presents an excellent opportunity for the University to build on our partnership with Newcastle United and support the continued incredible success of women’s football.
“We are looking forward to further developing this partnership with Newcastle United to provide wider mutual benefits for both parties.”
The players will be able to use three designated grass training pitches as well as a high-performance gym, recovery facilities, a player lounge and an analysis room, while technical and administrative staff will have use of office space plus an analysis room.
Cochrane Park underwent a £5.2m transformation in 2019, including new grass and artificial pitches, refurbishment and extension of its pavilion, originally constructed in the 1930s.
Newcastle United, under manager Becky Langley, are currently ninth in WSL2, with one win to their credit thus far this season. They play their home games at Gateshead International Stadium, and have a squad including some well-known names, including Lionesses Jordan Nobbs and Demi Stokes, US international Morgan Gautrat, and Irish international Aoife Mannion.
They face a tough test this Sunday, 19th October, when they host Manchester City of the WSL in the group stage of the Subway Women’s League Cup.
Newcastle United’s next match in WSL2 is on Sunday, 2nd November, when they travel to Ipswich Town.
