The Swedish media outlet saying their information is that Newcastle United have contacted Johan Lager, who recently chose to leave Hammarby where he was Director of Football.

His main experience is in women’s football and he has helped establish the women’s side of things at Hammarby as the dominant force in Sweden. Winning the league and cup double two seasons ago and they currently lead the table again this season.

The Newcastle United women’s team experienced successive promotions but this season has been once of consolidation, a step away from the Super League top tier. The Newcastle United owners have made clear that the women’s side of things is also an important part of what they see as a successful future at NUFC, with the very obvious intention of getting to the Super League and eventually competing in the women’s Champions League, as well as on the men’s side at Newcastle United.

No surprise then if Johan Lager is seen as the person to help continue the progress at Newcastle United when it comes to the women’s side of things.

However, if indeed Newcastle United are going to appoint him, Johan Lager may get a broader remit to make use of his experience at NUFC behind the scenes, working as part of Paul Mitchell’s team.

Less than three months ago, Newcastle United invited applicants for two new roles.

The club looking to appoint a director of football for the women’s side, that new role responsible for ‘all football operational departments’ at Newcastle United Women.

Whilst Newcastle United were also in February 2025 adverting for an ‘Executive assistant – Sporting Director’ at NUFC.

The job description stated that the role involves ‘providing comprehensive organisational, operational, administration and communication support.

‘Ensuring rigour and efficiency across the Sporting Directorate, the role will involve diary and communication management and response, UK and global travel arrangements, note taking and expense management.

‘Facilitating leadership and strategic meetings, documenting actions, ensuring accountability, and tracking progress across the Sporting Directorate and creating content for Board and other high-level strategic meetings as required.’

(When reading the report below, please note that ‘Bajen’ is just another name used for ‘Hammarby’, referring to the same club)

FotbollDirekt report – 1 May 2025:

‘Earlier this week it was clear that Johan Lager is leaving Hammarby .

Now FotbollDirekt can reveal that there could be a move to England for Bajen’s former sports director.

Newcastle United are showing interest in him, according to FD’s information.

On Monday, the unexpected news came that Johan Lager is leaving Hammarby after 15 years, seven of which as sports director when the club made it to the women’s Swedish league , won Swedish championship gold and cup gold and played group games in the Champions League.

He told FotbollDirekt earlier this week that the plan is not to be off work for too long, but that he hopes to have a new job soon.

“My ambition is not to go around and be idle for a long time, so I will probably jump on a job pretty soon. That’s what I think. Right now I’m open to suggestions and I have no restrictions, because my children are big so it’s a new situation for me”, he told FotbollDirekt yesterday.

Now FotbollDirekt can reveal that the next job could be in England.

According to FD’s information, Newcastle United are showing interest in Lager and the English club has reportedly contacted Bajen’s former sports director.

Newcastle [United Women’s team] are currently in the FA Championship, the English second division.
