Despite eight changes made by the Newcastle United Head Coach compared to five made by Thomas Frank, it was NUFC who deservedly won 2-0.

An excellent result against Spurs, who hadn’t lost an away game all season, in any competition.

Once the final whistle blew at St James’ Park on Wednesday night, all thoughts (well, unless you are a Spurs fan…) turned to the Carabao Cup quarter-final draw.

Who would Newcastle United get in the last eight and how would the other ties fall.

The Carabao Cup quarter-final draw coming out in the order of Arsenal v Palace, Cardiff v Chelsea, Man City v Brentford and finally, Newcastle v Fulham.

We asked for an instant fan/writer reaction to this Carabao Cup quarter-final draw from some of our regular contributors on The Mag.

Home was always the first priority but getting Fulham is a big plus.

Yes we could have had Cardiff but you would take Fulham at home ahead of the other teams any day.

Pity Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea all missed each other, but we cannot be too greedy!

Beat the mackems on the Sunday and then we have a quarter-final at home to look forward to…’

Simon Ritter:

‘Sweet! Another home fixture in our competition.

Only two quarter-finalists were lower than United in the football pyramid when the ties were eventually unveiled last night and we will be hosting one of them.

Fulham made a game of it five days ago but I will be saddened and disappointed if we cannot send them packing again in mid-December, when King Eddie should have an almost full-strength squad.

From what I saw of Wednesday’s other games, Brighton should have knocked out Arsenal, Wolves exposed Chelsea’s weaknesses and Palace were good value for their win at Fortress Anfield.

Any manager who disrespects the League Cup as much as Slot deserves everything he will kop (geddit!)

My tips for the last four are Palace, Man City, Cardiff and Newcastle Very United.’

GToon:

‘At home. That’s the most important thing. Anyone at home.

Tbh I’d rather play Arsenal, Man City or Chelsea at this stage. But Fulham it is. Hopefully we get right at them and get into the last four.

I’m not too bothered about the other ties other than my delight that those gets from liVARpool aren’t featuring. What a shame. Third biggest cheer of the night when their score was announced. Hilarious. Happy days!’

Matt Busby said…:

‘Surely that’s us in the semi finals for the third time in four years?

We hammered these cloggers last Saturday and I expect us to do so again in the Quarter Final of the League Cup.

It’ll be more difficult when we get to the next phase but we are in with a shout of going all the way, again.

This is wor trophy. Hands OFF!’

Greg McPeake:

‘Disappointed at Fulham at home as I was hoping for Fulham away, so I could get in to the game.

Good draw home to Fulham puts us in a good position.’

Greg’s 13 year old son Chuks McPeake:

‘Don’t want us to be distracted by this cup.

Champions league is what we need for our club to grow.

The big league is where we need to be.’

The Armchair Fan:

‘Fulham at home is a brilliant draw for us and a real opportunity to make the semi-final.

Arsenal, Chelsea and Man City will be thinking the same, it could be a very strong semi-final line up.

If we want to defend our title then we’ll have to beat some of the very best teams in the land, just like we did last year, and I have every confidence that Eddie Howe is fully prepared for another tilt at winning the cup.

One game at a time, let’s beat Fulham and have a very merry Christmas.’

David Punton:

‘United now have a brilliant chance to make the semi finals for the second season running.

It’s a good draw, with Fulham at home being a lot less daunting than if we’d draw Man City, Arsenal or Chelsea.

Fulham will need to be taken very seriously, of course, and they are going to be a challenge.’

Jamie Smith:

‘That’s mint and should be progress – hopefully more convincingly than the weekend just gone!

The QF’s unfortunately kept the big guns apart.

Palace may trouble Arsenal as they seem to be able to beat anybody, but an ominous semi final line up looks likely, should we get through.
