Newcastle United have suffered a setback in their search for attacking reinforcements, missing out on Nigerian wonderkid Zadok Yohanna.

St James’ Park chiefs had identified the explosive, left-footed right winger as a key target to strengthen manager Eddie Howe’s attacking options.

Newcastle pushed to finalise an agreement with AIK, briefly stalling Brighton’s early advances by presenting a higher initial bid than the Seagulls’ opening €23m offer.

Brighton’s reputation for developing elite global talent and providing clear progression pathways ultimately proved decisive in convincing Yohanna to join them.

Yohanna has enjoyed a meteoric rise in Scandinavia since graduating from the Ikon Allah Football Academy in Nigeria.

The teenager took the Swedish Allsvenskan by storm at the start of the 2026 campaign, recording two goals and two assists in his first seven league appearances, along with three goals in four Svenska Cupen matches.

His combination of physical power, acceleration and direct dribbling ability quickly sparked a Premier League bidding war involving Chelsea, Brighton and Newcastle.

Missing out on Yohanna is a blow for Newcastle, and they must now quickly turn to alternative targets.
