Newcastle United ‘only looking for the best’ amid transfer woes | OneFootball

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe says the club are only “looking for the best players” they can get in the transfer market after missing out on a host of targets.

It has been a miserable summer so far for the Magpies, who have failed to sign almost every player they have targeted this window.

Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, Bryan Mbeumo, James Trafford, Dean Huijsen and Liam Delap were all on Newcastle’s radar, but each one of them chose to join other clubs.

The Tyneside outfit also been frustrated in their pursuit of Yoane Wissa after Brentford rejected their offer of £25 million. Their attentions have turned to RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko, but they face competition from Manchester United.

Newcastle succeeded in signing Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest for a £55m transfer fee, while Antonio Cordero and Seung-soo Park have also arrived at St James’ Park. But there is a need for more signings as they prepare to compete in next season’s UEFA Champions League, particularly as uncertainty continues to surround the future of star man Alexander Isak.

“We’re looking for the best players that we can get,” said Howe in a press conference on Saturday. “Whatever our target position is, we’re looking for the best so I see all situations open and available to us.

“I feel that’s the only way that we’re going to get to where we want to go, which is to maximise, and it’s quality over quantity. It always has been. That’s always been the way that we try to work and the way that we try to recruit, and I think we’ve done it pretty well to this point.

“It’s been a challenging summer, because we’ve missed out on various targets for loads of different reasons, but we’re still very competitive, and we’re still in there trying to bring very good players to the club, and that won’t change ’til the window shuts.”
