Newcastle United are reportedly interested in Werder Bremen goalkeeper Mio Backhaus ahead of the summer transfer window.

The Magpies are planning a significant overhaul of their goalkeeping department and could look to bring Backhaus to St James’ Park to solve a problem position for manager Eddie Howe.

Backhaus has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after goalkeeping prospects, impressing throughout the season and establishing himself as first-choice at the Weserstadion.

The 22-year-old is averaging 3.2 saves per game and boasts a goals prevented figure of 1.45 for a Werder side that narrowly escaped relegation.

By contrast, current Magpies shot-stopper Nick Pope has registered a tally of -3.33.

With the ball at their feet, Backhaus has also been superior to Pope, completing an average of 26.1 passes per game at an accuracy of 79 percent, while Pope boasts 13.4 passes at a 60% success rate.

Pope has endured an inconsistent campaign, losing his starting spot to loanee Aaron Ramsdale mid-season.

Ramsdale is expected to return to Southampton, further accelerating Newcastle’s need for reinforcements.

Newcastle previously attempted to sign James Trafford from Manchester City last summer. They remain in the hunt for a new goalkeeper, with Ewen Jaouen reportedly closing in on a move to Tyneside.

They will have to fend off competition to sign Backhaus, with Freiburg also expressing interest.

Freiburg’s pursuit could intensify if their current first-choice, Noah Atubolu, departs – particularly if the club secures Champions League qualification.

Bremen hold a strong negotiating position, with the goalkeeper under contract until 2028. They are seeking around €20 million for him.

Newcastle are expected to be active in the market, with their finances potentially boosted if Anthony Gordon completes a move away.

If Newcastle can fend off competition from across Europe, they may well have found their goalkeeper for the future.
