The Lasses failed to test Shae Yanez in goal until second-half added time with an Oona Sevenius looping header, although there was also a headed attempt from Emily Murphy which went wide of the target.

Palace enjoyed the majority of possession on the night at Gateshead International Stadium, and United required Anna Tamminen to pull off a stunning second-half save from point-blank range to secure a point.

Tanya Oxtoby made one change from Wednesday's win over Birmingham City Women, with Beth Lumsden replacing Emilia Larsson.

On a rare Sunday evening kick-off for the Lasses this season, it also produced something else not seen often, and that was a half without United having a shot of any kind.

Despite United and Crystal Palace coming into the game as the league's two most in-form sides, it was a tough first half for both teams as neither keeper was truly tested apart from simple grabs and takes from crosses.

The closest Palace came to testing goalkeeper Tamminen was just before the half-hour mark when a half-cleared cross fell to My Cato on the edge of the area and looked set to hit the target before a brave Jemma Purfield block sent the effort dipping over the bar.

Aside from that deflected strike from Cato, both sides cancelled each other out while failing to take control of the game as countless passes went astray, and the referee awarded numerous fouls.

The second half began in a slightly better tempo from both sides, but it was indeed the visitors who looked the more threatening with a whipped-in cross finding the head of Elise Hughes; however, despite a huge leap, her header fell into the arms of Tamminen.

It was the 56th minute when Newcastle managed to have their first shot, albeit Charlotte Wardlaw's strike at the back post was battling against an acute angle and two Palace defenders who managed to block her strike.

With the game finely poised heading into the final half an hour, it appeared as though a piece of individual magic would be required to break the deadlock, so Tamminen needed to be alert when Jamie-Lee Napier's sliced cross was tipped behind for a corner.

Wardlaw was proving herself to be a dangerous player going forward for United as she whipped in a perfect cross for Murphy, taking out the Palace backline in the process, but the Republic of Ireland attacker could only head wide from inside the box.

There were just 15 minutes left on the clock when the visitors looked almost certain to take the lead after Tamminen initially stopped a cross, before reacting superbly on instinct and denying Kirsty Howat from close range.

Newcastle were handed one final chance in second-half added time, and they managed to produce their first shot on target of the match after Sevenius met Morgan Gautrat's free-kick with a looping header at Shae Yanez.
