The Premier League meeting between Newcastle and Sunderland was halted on 54 minutes after discriminatory insults were directed at Lutsharel Geertruida from sections of the Newcastle support.

The Premier League said in a post on X that an investigation would now follow incidents at St James' Park and reiterated that racism has no place in football or society.

Referee Anthony Taylor stopped play and activated the anti-discrimination protocol. As Newcastle defender Sven Botman received treatment, Sunderland captain Granit Xhaka ran to alert Taylor to the abuse aimed at his team-mate.

Taylor then informed both dugouts, spoke with Geertruida and match officials, and restarted the game shortly afterwards.

The match finished 2-1 to Sunderland, Brian Brobbey scoring the decisive goal. The result moved Sunderland up to 11th, above Newcastle in 12th.
