Neymar is at the centre of fresh controversy after comments deemed misogynistic towards a referee during Santos’s midweek win. CNN Brésil says the expression he used carries sexist connotations.
Left out of Brazil’s most recent squad, the former Paris Saint-Germain forward featured on Wednesday as Santos beat Remo 2-0, setting up a goal. Late on he was booked after a clash with an opponent, a caution that rules him out of the Flamengo clash.
He argued the yellow card was unjust, saying he had endured repeated dangerous tackles before protesting. He then criticised referee Sávio, accusing him of seeking the spotlight and disrespecting players, and used the term 'Chico'.
The term is described as a derivative of 'pig' that links menstruation with dirt, reinforcing negative ideas about periods.
The 34-year-old could face a suspension of up to 12 matches. In March, Red Bull Bragantino defender Gustavo Marques received 12 games for sexist remarks aimed at referee Daiane Muniz.
If Neymar were punished in similar fashion, his World Cup hopes could fade.
