Neymar has decided to stay with Santos until December after Brazil’s World Cup exit to Norway, telling friends of his plans while in the United States.
According to Diario Do Peixe, the forward has resolved to honour his deal through December. He remains under contract with Santos until the end of 2026.
After the defeat, he travelled to Orlando to celebrate his daughter Mel’s first birthday, then on Friday went to Las Vegas to play in a poker tournament. He is due to report back on 17.
He has told friends he cannot leave Santos or his team-mates now. The club are in a serious financial crisis, have been hit with a transfer ban and cannot register players, and they are close to the Brasileirão relegation zone.
Neymar had considered retiring, and his father and agent posted on social media urging him to continue. He has also received interest from clubs in the United States, but has expressed a desire to stay and help them avoid the drop, as he did last year.
He has weighed the situation of his wife, Bruna Biancardi, who is pregnant. Staying at Santos until December keeps his family on the coast, where they are settled, for the final stage of the pregnancy.
