Manchester United are on the hunt for a backup striker this summer ahead of the club’s return to the Champions League.

Benjamin Sesko proved to be a revelation under Michael Carrick in the second half of last season, but the Slovenian will need help as the Red Devils get set to navigate across four fronts.

Joshua Zirkzee, despite his obvious strengths, has failed to bridge the gap when it comes to finding the back of the net in Sesko’s absence.

This is why INEOS are keen to offload the Dutchman in favour of a proven goalscorer. Links have emerged with the likes of Dusan Vlahovic and Ollie Watkins, but both deals will be difficult to pull off.

Nick Woltemade emerges as surprise option

United’s co-owners prefer Premier League-proven names under a certain age, and a surprising new name has now been linked with a move to Old Trafford.

CaughtOffside have claimed that Newcastle are open to loaning out Nick Woltemade after his struggles last season.

After a stunning start to life at St. James’ Park, the German faltered badly in the second half of the previous campaign, and it seems the Magpies have had enough.

Newcastle would prefer to sell the Germany international for £55 million, but are aware that not many teams will bid that high.

Which is why they are open to a loan exit, which would include an option to buy with multiple European clubs monitoring the situation.

Nick Woltemade is attracting interest from Aston Villa, Atletico Madrid, and Borussia Dortmund, but now, United and Liverpool have also joined the race.

“One issue, though, is that they’re keen on a permanent sale for around €65m, but for now it’s probably more likely that clubs will seek a loan with an option to buy.

Versatility of Nick Woltemade could prove useful

“Both Liverpool and Man Utd are alert to Woltemade’s situation and considering him as an option to add depth to their squads this summer.”

The former VfB Stuttgart ace can play as a No.9 and even as an attacking midfielder, and his versatility could be a huge asset for United.

It will be intriguing to see if INEOS actually push to sign Newcastle’s No.27. They also remain interested in Lewis Hall, but as things stand, Newcastle are unlikely to sell.
