Nico Schlotterbeck will miss the remainder of the World Cup after suffering a left-ankle ligament tear, Sky Germany and Bild report. The Borussia Dortmund defender could be sidelined for around two months.

Germany beat Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 on Saturday, but the 26-year-old was forced off at half-time.

Antonio Rüdiger replaced Schlotterbeck at the interval and is now expected to start the rest of Germany’s matches alongside Jonathan Tah.

Schlotterbeck’s withdrawal is a significant setback for Germany’s defence at the tournament.

Germany have already secured first place in Group E and face Ecuador in their final group game on Thursday.
