Nicolás Otamendi could set unmatched unbeaten record if Benfica avoid defeat at Estoril | OneFootball

If Benfica take at least a point at Estoril in Amoreira on Saturday, captain Nicolás Otamendi would become the only player in Portugal to complete three unbeaten league campaigns.

According to Glorioso 1904, the trip may also carry extra meaning. Otamendi is out of contract and could be close to leaving the Luz, so this could be a farewell.

The Argentine previously achieved unbeaten titles with Porto in 2010/11 and 2012/13. Now 38, he could repeat the feat with Benfica, with José Mourinho’s side reaching the final round still undefeated.

Only four teams have completed a Liga season without defeat, Benfica in 1972/73 and 1977/78, Porto in 2010/11 and 2012/13. Across those campaigns, 78 players featured, though only a few did it more than once.

Another invincible season would see Otamendi move beyond Benfica greats Bento, Humberto Coelho, Shéu and Toni, each with two unbeaten championships. He would sit alone at the top of that list.
