Record reports that Benfica are open to renewing Nicolás Otamendi’s contract if he accepts a salary cut.
The defender’s future remains unclear with his deal running down, and recent speculation has suggested the sides are closer to agreement on those terms.
The report added that a summer exit is no longer certain, creating room for an extension. Any new contract would involve reduced pay, with the board unwilling to keep the 38-year-old at the top of the wage structure.
The report also noted that Otamendi believes he can play one more season in Europe and help Benfica, delaying a return to Argentina.
The decision now rests with Otamendi. River Plate have shown they are open to signing him when the summer window reopens, while Benfica remain open to a renewal only on revised terms.
This season he has played 47 competitive games for Benfica, 28 in Liga Portugal Betclic, 14 in the Champions League, two in the Taça de Portugal, two in the Taça da Liga and one in the Supertaça, across 4,169 minutes, scoring three goals. He is valued at one million euros.
