O Jogo reports that players across the divide have sent messages of support to FC Porto midfielder Vasco Sousa as he continues his recovery from a serious injury.

The 22-year-old was on loan at Moreirense when he fractured the fibula in his right leg against Benfica in December. He had surgery at Hospital da CUF, then suffered a rare and severe complication that badly affected nearby muscle and, in the worst case, could have led to amputation.

After 39 days in hospital and 21 trips to the operating theatre, Sousa was discharged and returned yesterday to CTFD Jorge Costa to begin rehabilitation.

Messages came from rival clubs, including Benfica’s Richard Ríos and Sporting duo Pedro Gonçalves and Eduardo Quaresma, underlining that rivalry is set aside in such moments.

Other figures to reach out included Pepe, Diogo Dalot, Sérgio Oliveira, Otávio, Helton and Ukra, as well as Cláudio Ramos, Tiago Dantas, André Franco and Hugo Félix.

On social media, his partner Joana Guise recounted the ordeal through Christmas and New Year and the daily support she provided, a post that also drew further messages, including from Ríos.
