Norway’s professional footballers’ union NISO has joined the Justice for Players collective action against FIFA, the union said in a statement on Thursday.
The action follows the Court of Justice of the European Union’s Diarra ruling on 4 October 2024, which found parts of FIFA’s regulations in breach of EU law on free movement and competition. The judgment declared unlawful the transfer rules introduced by FIFA in 2002.
The claim contends that players may have suffered financial loss over time because of those rules. It is open to professionals who had contractual relationships in the EU, the EEA and the UK from 2002 to the present.
NISO joins 18 national unions already involved, among them France’s UNFP, which is a co-claimant in the case.
It is estimated that up to 100,000 players could have been affected over the past two decades.
