Enzo Maresca has played down the prospect of imminent transfer activity at Manchester City, while acknowledging the club still have work to do following the departures of several experienced players.

The Blues have bolstered their midfield with the acquisition of England international Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for a club record £116 million as they embark upon life beyond Pep Guardiola, who was replaced by Maresca in June.

Maresca was speaking ahead of Wednesday’s pre-season friendly against K-League All Stars in Seoul, having previously confirmed the club are in active discussions over transfer targets with director of football Hugo Viana.

Asked directly whether City are close to bringing in any more players, Maresca said: “No, not at the moment. The reason why I said there are things to do is because the transfer window is open and when it’s open, anything can happen.

“This is the reason why I said. It’s just August, and then from September when it’s closed, it’s completely different. Fortunately, this is a squad that doesn’t need to do many things.

“At the same time, the club lost important players in terms of experience like Bernardo, John, Nathan – different players. So for sure there are things that we need to do.”

What does Maresca’s assessment tell us about City’s remaining business?

The distinction Maresca draws between what the squad needs and what it has lost is a meaningful one. The core of the group is strong – built around Rodri, Erling Haaland and the £116 million arrival of Elliot Anderson – but the experience lost through the exits of Bernardo Silva, John Stones and Nathan Ake is not easily replaced by squad depth alone.

City’s most pressing outstanding business centres on the winger position, with Savinho’s future unresolved amid Tottenham’s sustained pursuit, and the Ayyoub Bouaddi negotiations with Lille still ongoing in the background.

Maresca’s “not at the moment” phrasing leaves the door open deliberately – acknowledging that the window remains live and situations can shift quickly, without committing to a timeline that could compromise City’s negotiating position.

With the Premier League season opening against Bournemouth on 23 August, the club’s ambition to address those gaps before competitive football returns is well understood – even if the manager himself is in no rush to say so publicly.
