Andre Onana: The state of play

When Onana joined the Turkish outfit back in September 2025, no buy obligation or option was included in the terms by Manchester United, which is perhaps surprising, given how keen they are to get him off the books.

United shelled out a whopping £47.2 million to bring the shot-stopper in from Inter Milan back in 2023, doing so under the request of then-manager Erik ten Hag, who had worked with Onana at Ajax.

Yet, two error-ridden campaigns led to him being offloaded just a month into 2025/2026, with Senne Lammens signed to succeed the Cameroonian as the side’s No.1.

Even before his departure, Onana had fallen out of favour under Ruben Amorim and behind Altay Bayindir in the pecking order due to his dismal showing in the Europa League final.

When he then made his first start of the season in the second round of the League Cup and conceded two first-half goals to League Two opponents Grimsby Town before letting in 12 penalties, it spelt the end of his Red Devils career.

Remarkably, reports in recent months have suggested Onana had set his sights on returning to Old Trafford and battling to reclaim his starting spot, though it goes without saying that’s not even a remote possibility from United’s perspective.

It does bode well that Trabzonspor want to keep hold of him, as if Onana himself opens the door to a permanent transfer, United can raise some much-needed funds early on in the window.

“We want to extend Andre Onana’s loan for another year. He’s a player who provides excellent support in the development of the young players behind him,” said club president Ertugrul Dogan.
