Nuno Catarino has reiterated that Benfica’s plan is to be in the Champions League, adding that adjustments would follow if qualification is missed. According to Glorioso 1904, the club’s CFO set out the stance after presenting a bond update.
Speaking on Monday at a special Euronext session in Lisbon, Catarino unveiled the results of the latest bond issue and was asked about the absence of president Rui Costa and the risk of falling short in Europe’s top competition.
He said the objective remains participation in the Champions League and that the club always works towards that aim. If that does not happen, he noted, Benfica would make the necessary readjustments, as has been done previously.
Catarino stressed the issuance is geared towards long-term financing of the SAD. He outlined that proceeds are intended partly to repay the previous bond, to strengthen liquidity and to extend maturities, describing it as part of the company’s plan rather than a reaction to end-of-season outcomes.
He also remarked that buying and selling players is the reality for all clubs every year. As for Costa’s non-attendance, he said the president was unable to be there due to a last-minute personal matter.
