Speaking to Sport Bild (via @bvbnewsblog), Nuri Sahin has spoken on what Borussia Dortmund need to do to become a top team.

In the context of Germany and the Bundesliga, Dortmund are one of the biggest teams in the country, but when it comes to Europe as a whole they drop down the pecking order, despite reaching the Champions League final last season. On what Dortmund need to do to be a top team, Sahin said:

“To be a top team, we have to deliver results every three days. The fact is that we haven’t managed to do that yet. But we will become a top team.”

The former midfielder continued:

“We will get to the point where people sit in front of the television, watch BVB and say: “That’s how a top team plays!” That we simply win 1:0 at Union and three weeks later nobody knows who scored the goal.” “What drives me is that we can all say together on one day at BVB: ‘Now we are so stable, now we are really attacking! And we will reach that day.”

Since taking over from Edin Terzic in the summer, there have been some positive signs under Sahin mainly in the attacking area whether that be Dortmund’s 4-2 win against Heidenheim in the Bundesliga or their 7-1 win against Celtic in the Champions League.

However, they still struggle defensively and lack overall consistency. This can be seen with their 5-1 loss to VfB Stuttgart as well as their 2-1 loss to Union Berlin. On top of this, the team at times, despite the big investment in the squad in the summer does not play any better compared to the previous seasons under Terzic.

Dortmund are currently seventh in the Bundesliga and are experiencing one of their worst starts in the Bundesliga in 10 years.
