Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of Borussia Dortmund’s Bundesliga tie against Mainz, head coach Nuri Şahin has provided an update on the injury situation.
Dortmund has struggled with injuries lately and has had to name a bare-bones senior squad in their last two games, boosted by academy players. Ahead of the international break, Şahin gave an update:
“Anton won’t make it. Bensebaini is suspended. We won’t take any risks with Kobel before the international break. Julian Ryerson and Yan Couto will be at the final training session today. We hope and assume that it will work out for them.”
The potential return of Julian Ryerson and Yan Couto will be a big boost to Dortmund as Pascal Groß has been filling in at right-back in the past two games, while with Ramy Bensebaini suspended they would likely have to play academy player Almugera Kabar at left-back.
In midweek, Dortmund beat Austrian champions Sturm Graz 1-0 following a late goal from Donyell Malen. Dortmund named an unchanged side from their 2-1 win against RB Leipzig last weekend with youth players Cole Campbell and Ayman Azhil being brought on.
