But Archie Gray showcased exactly why he has won so many plaudits of late, lashing in a powerful strike after the hour mark to put his country back in front.
England U21 boss Lee Carsley spoke ahead of the game of his admiration for how Gray has dealt with a difficult situation at his club Tottenham this season, who are locked firmly in a relegation battle.
His leadership ability was certainly demonstrated here, driving his team on and getting the crucial goal to set England on the way to a deserved victory. New Spurs boss Roberto de Zerbi will certainly be hoping he can bring more of that when he returns to north London.
There was time for a fourth too, after Nwaneri’s side-foot finish had made it three, with Romaine Esse heading in from Josh King’s lofted ball into the box to put the game well and truly out of sight and strengthen England’s hopes of qualifying for the U21 Euros, sitting top of the group.
