Free agency is officially open in Major League Soccer, and New York City FC should sign a few free agents from the league. Of course, it would be great for Maxi Moralez to return, but at least the Pigeons know they do not need to compete with anyone else if the legend decides to play in 2026. But there is one free agent the club must act quickly on if they want to ensure that he re-signs with the Pigeons: Justin Haak.
The versatile player, who can play in the defensive midfield and backline, grew significantly in 2025, especially as a center-back. His stock has grown, and he has interest from other MLS clubs and abroad. While it is believed that Haak would be better off staying stateside at least one more year before taking the leap to Europe, there is no question that the appeal of going overseas or even a new challenge here could entice him.
That is why NYCFC must offer him the best deal possible, and do so quickly. Of course, when it comes to European sides, Haak could not be signed until January. However, free agents can begin negotiating with MLS teams, including their previous one. Technically, Haak is still a part of the Bronx side until December 31.
However, for all intents and purposes, since the season is over, he is officially a free agent. With multiple MLS teams vying for his services, NYCFC needs to act now, rather than later. Yes, the two parties are discussing his future. But they need to get out a great deal that will convince him to stay in the Big Apple.
If the club waits, then their Homegrown player might listen to other offers. Fans will hope he does not go elsewhere, but regardless, this is a business. If another team offers more money and has a great project to help Haak continue his development, then there is a good chance he can leave.
Now, some might think that NYCFC cannot sign anyone until Sporting Director Todd Dunivant begins the role in January. But teams sometimes go without positions filled for some time, and the job gets done. In other words, the club can still negotiate and re-sign Haak before 2026. The roster-building process does not stop just because Dunivant has not started yet.
In addition, knowing who is coming back out of the free agents will help NYCFC in preparing for the new season. Haak signing a new contract would mean that the club has one less player to sign. There might be changes in the backline, but the 24-year-old does not have to be one of them.
Time is ticking, and this is probably one of the most important tasks for the Pigeons this offseason, next to signing a striker. NYCFC bringing back Haak would maintain consistency and allow him to continue his development under Pascal Jansen.
