June might be slow on the pitch since New York City FC is only playing two games this month. The Pigeons already beat Atlanta United FC, serving revenge by winning 4-0. However, the news related to and off the pitch is in full swing.
Therefore, let's take a look at the latest NYCFC news roundup that includes players at the Gold Cup and a stadium update.
Two NYCFC players are currently playing at the CONCACAF Gold Cup: Matt Freese and Alonso Martínez. Freese is with the USMNT, and he started in the 5-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago. The goalkeeper earned his first clean sheet with the national team and had a solid performance. Then, Martínez started for Costa Rica and scored in their crazy 4-3 win over Suriname.
Both national teams are currently in first place in their respective groups. Nevertheless, they have only played one game so far, so only time will tell whether the NYCFC players move on.
Meanwhile, Mitja Ilenič has been with the U-21 Slovenia team for the U-21 Euros. He has started and played in both games, losing to Germany and tying with England. Slovenia is currently in third place in their group.
Two of NYCFC's three scorers against Atlanta made the Team of the Matchday for Matchday 19. Maxi Moralez was on the bench after scoring the opening goal. Then, Hannes Wolf made the Starting XI after his two goals and an assist. He joins players like João Klauss and Marco Reuss.
This is a great way to celebrate a few of the stars from Thursday's win. Congratulations are in order for the two players.
2027 will be here before one knows it, which means Etihad Park will be opening up, pending there are no setbacks.
There is some good stadium news. NYCFC announced that the first beam was placed on Monday, meaning the first bit of steel was used. The steel was locally sourced from New York, which means the club is committing to their promise to use locally sourced materials when they are able to do so.
The latest news is exciting because the stadium will start to take shape. Rather than looking at flat land that has a foundation, fans will soon see the outline of the building go up. NYCFC's stadium construction continues to move along.
