The previous game against Real Betis had a bittersweet edge to it for FC Barcelona. Despite claiming an impressive victory, it was also the game in which Robert Lewandowski played his final home game for the club, and another player ended up suffering a major injury setback.

Fermin Lopez, as reported previously, was taken off at the halfway mark of the game due to discomfort in the fifth metatarsal of his right foot. Earlier reports had already suggested that a fracture could be the issue, and those fears have now officially been confirmed by Barcelona.

According to the club’s official medical statement, Lopez has suffered a fracture to the fifth metatarsal bone in his right foot and will now undergo surgery. It is a massive blow for the youngster, considering the fact that the FIFA World Cup is now just less than one month away.

Reports surrounding the injury have already revealed that the midfielder is expected to remain out of action for around three months, which effectively rules him out of the mega event.

Given the kind of season that he has had for Barcelona, the 23-year-old was expected to be an important part of the Spain squad heading into the competition.

It would also likely have been his first-ever appearance for his national team at a World Cup, making the timing of the injury even more unfortunate for the youngster.

As for Barcelona, the injury essentially confirms the end of the season for Lopez. With the La Liga title already secured, the youngster would only miss the club’s final league game.

However, the biggest disappointment without a doubt will be missing the biggest international competition in football at such an important stage of his career.
