After Florentino Perez himself confirmed on Wednesday that Jose Mourinho is his chosen manager to lead Real Madrid next season, SL Benfica have now made an announcement confirming the development.

The Portuguese heavyweights issued an official statement in which they confirmed that Real Madrid will pay the 63-year-old manager’s €15 million release clause once Perez wins the upcoming presidential elections.

The presidential elections at Real Madrid will take place this Sunday, on 7 June, with Perez going up against Enrique Riquelme, who has other plans for the club.

Perez, though, is seen as the favourite to come out on top, with the current president receiving widespread support from many club legends.

Having already announced the first major signing for the summer in Ibrahima Konate, Perez also confirmed his plans to bring Mourinho, which Benfica have now confirmed.

Following a disappointing campaign under Xabi Alonso and later Alvaro Arbeloa, the president sees Mourinho as the ideal candidate to lead Real Madrid back to the top.

If everything goes according to plan, the Portuguese tactician will return to the Santiago Bernabeu 13 years after his first stint with Los Blancos, during which he won three trophies.
