Borussia Mönchengladbach midfielder Julian Weigl’s move to Saudi Arabia – the details of which are highly interesting – has been officially confirmed. The second Bundesliga outfit of Weigl’s career bade him farewell on Monday evening. Weigl – a former Borussia Dortmund professional who also represented 1860 München in the 2. Bundesliga – will be moving to Saudi club Al-Qadisiya.

Weigl’s end to his tenure at Gladbach proved an unfortunate one. Pushed out of the team’s leadership council at the beginning of the season, the 29-year-old surely felt unwelcome at the BMG project. Unfortunately for the south Bavarian native son, Weigl was unable to earn any more German national team caps during his three seasons with die Fohlen.

Julian was a regular player for us over the past three seasons and also made a valuable contribution in his role as one of the captains,” Gladbach sporting director Roland Virkus noted in a club statement “We have complied with his wish to make another change in his sporting career and have together found an amicable solution.

Weigl himself issued only a terse statement noting that he had donned his Gladbach jersey “with pride” over the past three seasons. The once €30m-valued player – considered a sure bet to represent the German national team regularly prior to an ill-timed 2017 injury – will at least receive the opportunity to draw a large salary on the Arabian Peninsula.
