Former Manchester United midfielder Juan Mata has completed a switch from Western Sydney Wanderers to fellow A-League outfit Melbourne Victory.

He joined Wanderers last year from Japanese side Vissel Kobe.

It was reported that Mata’s decision to leave Wanderers stemmed from his desire for more playing time as he approaches the twilight of his illustrious career.

Now, the switch has been confirmed, with Mata the latest addition to the Victory squad.

Mata officially signs for Victory

Confirming the news on X, Mata wrote, “Thank you very much to all the Western Sydney Wanderers family: everyone who is part of the club, fans, RBB… You are such a special club and will never forget how you welcomed me and your support through the season.”

“Your vision in using the power of football to positively impact society sets you apart and you will always have a friend in me.”

“All the best for the future, thank you for this wonderful experience in Sydney and for having opened the A-Leagues door to me. I’m really proud to have worn your shirt.”

Mata added, “I am excited to be coming to Melbourne and to be part of one of the most respected clubs in the League and playing in front of the incredible members and fans.”

“I am driven and motivated to help this team win trophies, and to work with the Club as part of a longer-term plan to strengthen football in the country.”

Victory head coach Arthur Diles hailed Mata’s extensive experience and knowledge of the game, tipping him to become a key squad member.

Mata made 285 appearances across all competitions for United, scoring an impressive 51 goals in that period.
