Today, Luciano Spalletti has named his latest Italian National Team squad, and AC Milan will be delighted to see Matteo Gabbia named for several reasons.

It has been almost 600 days since Milan could last say that they had a representative named in an Azzurri squad (the EURO 2024 qualifiers in March 2023), but today, we can change that, with Spalletti naming the central defender in his squad for the upcoming Nations League fixtures.

After Sandro Tonali – the last player to earn a call-up – left Milan, there were questions asked about who the next representative would be, and very few people would suggest Gabbia. Nearly 15 months after the midfielder’s departure, though, there is no player more deserving.

The similarities between the Newcastle United midfielder and Gabbia are clear, both love the club, and there have been questions about the defender’s potential to wear the armband one day, just as there were with Tonali.

After scoring the winner against Inter, his position at the Rossoneri has never been more secure, and with a new contract expected at some point, things are going brilliantly for the defender.

During the summer, Italy were Milan-less, and many questioned it. Now, with Gabbia and Milan among the Azzurri, there can be no questions.
