Lazio patron Claudio Lotito has officially purchased Reggina 1914, becoming a two-club owner for the first time since selling Salernitana in 2021.
The Calabrian club has been endured miserable years, especially after suffering demotion to Serie D in 2023 due to financial irregularities. The club’s majority owner Nino Ballarino was initially negotiating a sale with interested Italian-American businessman Matt Rizzetta. However, the latter was eventually pushed out in favor of Lotito.
While the deal has been in the air over the past few weeks, the confirmation has finally arrived on Friday, with Reggina’s official website announcing the takeover.
We would like to inform you that this afternoon in Rome, the sale of Reggina to a company affiliated with President Claudio Lotito’s Group was finalized. The move stems from the desire to ensure the Amaranto club’s continuity and new growth prospects, while respecting Reggina’s history and the passion for this sport shared by the people of Reggio Calabria.
Lotito was aided by Reggio Calabria’s mayor, Francesco Cannizzaro, as both men are members of the ‘Forza Italia’ political party. The latter’s role was even acknowledged by Reggina’s press release.
The contribution of the mayor of Reggio Calabria, the Honorable Francesco Cannizzaro, who acted as a bridge between the parties involved, was crucial to the success of this negotiation. The management team thanks the fans, the institutions, and all the members who supported the club’s journey, and wishes the new owners every success.
While the official note didn’t disclose any figures, Italian journalist Alfredo Pedulla firmly believes the acquisition cost the Lotito family €1.6 million.
The timing of the takeover has been raising eyebrows in the Italian capital, especially with organized Lazio fan groups in an open revolt against the increasingly unpopular club president and owner.
Interestingly, a new regulation in Italy prohibits the same person or entity from owning two Italian clubs in the professional division. Therefore, if Reggina are promoted to Serie C at the end of next season —as planned— Lotito would be given a one-year deadline to sell either the Amaranto or Lazio.
